The Art Gallery of Ballarat holds an outstanding collection of works by members of the Lindsay family, largely acquired through a bequest from Mary Lindsay, sister of Reg, Lionel, Norman, Ruby and Daryl Lindsay, and added to by donations from various members of the Lindsay family and purchases by the Gallery. In 2019 the Copland Foundation gave the Art Gallery of Ballarat funds to undertake conservation work on the Lindsay works on paper. This exhibition features work by Morris Cohen, a passionate and skilled amateur artist whose work was exhibited alongside that of many of the leading Australian artists of his generation. Born in Ballarat in 1865, he was a self-taught artist and caricaturist. He travelled and painted extensively overseas and was part of the thriving Melbourne art scene at the turn of the 20th century, exhibiting alongside Hans Heysen, George Lambert, Margaret Preston, Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and Thea Proctor.
