The UMI Gallery and Gift Shop showcases and sells authentic and ethically produced First Nations art, craft, books and gifts, all created by our First Nations member artists from all across the Cape and Torres Strait Islands.
Operating since 2005, UMI Arts is a not-for-profit organisation governed and managed by an all-First Nations Board. UMI Arts mission is to operate a cultural organisation that assists First Nations people to participate in the maintenance, preservation and protection of culture.UMI is a Creole word that means ‘You and Me’. This is significant as we believe that we need to work together to keep our culture strong. UMI Arts is the incubator for First Nations arts and cultural organisation for Far North Queensland, an area that extends north of Cairns (Gimuy Burra) to include the Torres Strait Islands, south to Cardwell, west to Camooweal and includes the Gulf and Mt Isa regions.
UMI Arts provides opportunities for over 1000 First Nations members to participate in an ever-changing, evolving, exciting and unique visual art, craft, dance, music programs and activities. Members who participate in UMI Arts programs leave with new skills, knowledge, and strengthened confidence with many going on to maintain a sustainable cultural business or gain meaningful employment in the creative industries sector.
