Artist Marcus Canning is no stranger to West Australian history. In a way, he’s been part of it since the beginning – his great, great uncle Alfred was one of the state’s best-known surveyors and the Canning River, Canning Bridge and Canning Highway all carry his name.
But in his new work at Cathedral Square, Onward! Onward!, Marcus wanted to gently encourage viewers to engage with Western Australia’s Indigenous history in a way they might not have ever experienced before – etching 256 granite pavers with English and Noongar words and phrases, for Cathedral Square visitors to experience.
